Sour Seed Bagels, West Palm Beach

by Krista

Bagels are hot again, I guess?

Yesterday, I wrote about Brooklyn Water Bagels in Port St. Lucie. Then, inspired by my morning walk in West Palm Beach, I saw that there was a new addition to the neighborhood: Sour Seed Bagels.

Sour Seed Bagels is located in The Avalon on Fern Street. I lived in this building for seven months in 2019 and LOVED IT. From my apartment on the 17th floor, I had a view of the Intracoastal. I could sit there all day, watching the water.

I think about that apartment all the time. If only that building would go condo. (Although I’m sure I’d be priced out.)

Yesterday, when I walked by Sour Seed, the line was LONG. So this morning, I was strategic. I was out of my apartment by 8:20 am. With a brisk walk, I as in line by 8:30. Unfortunately, there was a woman there placing the world’s largest bagel order. So it was a good 20 minute wait until it was my turn. While I waited, I admired the cashmere on the woman in front of me. Yes, that’s right…let me go pick up a bagel at 8:30 am on a Sunday in my cashmere. There were also a lot of athletic skirts on display. I’m just not into athletic skirts.

By the time I made it to the ONE cash register, thy were out of Everything bagels. Bummer. I went with Rosemary instead.

Sour Seed’s schtick is that they are sourdough bagels. Lower in gluten.

This means that the bagels have a very very chewy sourdough crust. Like…your jaw hurts chewy. Descriptions online call the crust crunchy but I would disagree. Hard and chewy.

The scallion cream cheese was good though. And the Rosemary was also tasty. A little salty actually. Nice.

It was just the chewiness that got me.

Also nice? The two tiny gherkins served with my bagel! A nice surprise. I love tiny gherkins.

And the coffee. They coffee was very good.

Interesting detail: The guy that owns Sour Seed used to own Meraki Juice, a chain with a location right across from Sour Seed. I rarely ever see anyone in Meraki. It seems weird to open across the street from the business you used to own but I suppose it’s a free country (for now).

Weird question: Where is everyone reading about Sour Seed? When I searched for it online, I found some TikToks but no news articles. This was the same for Maman when it opened. What news source on new restaurant openings am I missing? I am just so intrigued by the length of the lines here!

The Verdict: Only if there’s not a line and there’s somewhere to sit. I had to take my bagel to the park across the street.
